The Antidote to Stagnancy

Movement is the antidote to stagnancy. Whether I am feeling physically, mentally, emotionally or creatively stagnant, movement is always the answer.

This is one more place where writing and yoga intersect.

When I am depressed or frustrated or anxious I turn to both of these practices. Moving my body moves that energy. Moving my pen across the page lightens the weight of that energy because it often originates and resides in my mind.

Yoga brings me into the present moment. Writing processes the present moment.

Yoga allows my body to flow. Writing allows my thoughts to flow through me.

Yoga connects me to my body, dropping me out of the drama of my mind. Writing connects me to my self, spilling the drama onto the page.

Try it yourself. It doesn’t have to be a full hour long yoga session. You can take a few deeps breath in Child’s Pose. Or move through a few sun salutations. Find a few spinal twists.

Then pick up your pen and write. Try these prompts:

In this moment…

I want to write….

I’m afraid to write…
